A study in 1991 estimated that over 57 percent of women and over 76 percent of men get at least one headache a month. Although headaches are common, this does not mean that they are "normal." A headache is a sign that something is wrong. There are many different causes of headaches, but one of the most common causes is inflammation of the spinal nerves that exit off of the spinal cord through vertebrae in the neck. These types of headaches are called "cervicogenic" headaches and the cause is most often misalignments of the vertebrae (subluxations). When there are subluxations in the neck the ligaments, muscles, and nerves in that area get twisted. This twisting can refer pain up the neck into the base of the skull.
